A group of researchers, lead by Dr. Joel Ray, at St. Michael's hospital in Toronto have developed the first newborn weight curves for specific ethnic groups across Canada. These birthweight curves, which take into consideration both the baby's sex and mom's ethnicity, are used to compare one baby's weight to others of the same age.
These curves are used to track a baby's growth and determine whether a baby is under or overweight; issues that can result in delivery decisions such as elective caesarean section and early induction. They may also affect the baby's care in terms of length of hospital stay, extra tests and further follow up with pediatricians.
The new curves will more accurately identify whether a baby is in fact under or overweight. They may help to improve care and alleviate unnecessary anxiety for new parents.
